The Banff Centre's Film & Media Artist-in-Residence program provides a well-supported environment for professional development for artists in digital film and media, audio, research, and photography. Residencies are ideal for individuals and teams who want time and space to create new works, research innovative ideas, and experiment with different techniques and modes of production. Projects in all stages, from experimentation to production and post-production, are welcome. Audio, video, interactive, and research facilities are available to help participants develop all aspects of pre- and post-production for their project. A private studio accessible 24 hours a day, and/or collaborative working spaces are provided. Electricity is Magic Gallery

Call for Entries
Electricity is Magic (EiM) was founded in 2009 by Eric Powell and Matt Griffin, primarily as a vehicle to release their own experimental electronic and electroacoustic music. Quickly, however, it grew to be a curatorial project, and, since late 2009, EiM have been putting on art and performance events throughout North America.

EiM has expanded and will be presenting gallery shows at its (semi-)permanent home at the EiM Gallery, located at 715 Richmond St. W. in Toronto, ON.

The aim of the gallery space is to continue to present works that don’t necessarily fit comfortably within a traditional gallery context. Artists will be given the challenge of presenting work which engages with or reacts to the living space of the apartment. They are particularly interested in work which employs some aspect of technological mediation, but not necessarily as the impetus for the piece. They are also interested in slow art, which not only requests, but often demands, and always reminds us of the pleasure in sustained viewing of a particular work.

Call for works is ongoing and they invite submissions from individual artists, collectives, or curators to submit proposals for the EiM Gallery. Their space is non-traditional, and as such, they have some unique parameters for artists to contend with.

Canadian Centre for Architecture 2013 Curatorial Opportunities Program

For the third year, the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) launches two curatorial opportunities beginning in Fall 2013: the Young Curator Program and the Curatorial Internships Program.

The Young Curator Program offers the opportunity to propose and curate a project on the contemporary debate in architecture, urbanism, and landscape design during a residency of three months at the CCA. Architects, journalists, designers, critics, historians and practitioners in any other relevant field born on or after 1 January 1978 are eligible. With the generous support of the Power Corporation of Canada, the Curatorial Internships Program encourages students and recent graduates in design disciplines, arts and humanities born on or after January 1, 1983 to become acquainted with the CCA's collection, exhibition, and research programs through an internship of six to nine months in Montréal.

The call for applications for both the Young Curator Program and the Curatorial Internships Program will remain open until April 15, 2013, with the residency and internship beginning in fall 2013.

221A Call for Curatorial Residents 2013-14

221A is an artist-run centre located in Vancouver, Canada with a mandate to support the advancement of contemporary art that explores design as a subject. Projects presented at 221A address design in its widest sense, which may encompass graphics, products, architecture, or, more broadly, social codes and conventions.

221A is seeking proposals from curators for projects to commence in 2014. Implemented in 2010 the Curatorial Residencies program encourages a diversity of curatorial approaches to the organization's mandate. Emerging and professional curators, curatorial collectives, which may include recent graduates and practicing artists, designers and architects, are encouraged to submit proposals to be developed over the course of one year. Projects may include exhibitions, performances, publications, talks or workshops. Proposals should discuss a viewpoint, theory or approach that the project hopes to foster in relation to the organization's mandate.

Selected candidates will be expected to work with the Executive Director to research, plan and execute the project. In addition, selected curators are required to participate in the Curatorial Committee, starting mid 2013 for a minimum one-year term (meeting every 2 months) to offer feedback to other curatorial residents and the program. The committee offers a space for reflection on the wider program at 221A and a relationship between curatorial residents, staff and community. International participants will be expected to attend meetings through online voice/video chat.

Proposal Guidelines


Applicants must submit a digital proposal (to bchhay@221a.ca) including:

·      -a one to two-page project proposal, describing the curatorial project;


·      -a current CV of each of the key contributors (maximum 3 pages each);


·      -related images/texts as required (pdf or jpegs, max. 15 images, or up to 10 min. of audio or video). For large format images or videos that cannot be transmitted by email please include instructions for access.

Proposals are intended to provide the overall intention and background of the project. Applicants proposing self-curated projects must describe the reasoning behind this approach. Further research and development of the project is expected upon selection.

Selections Process


Project proposals are shortlisted by a committee comprised of members of the Board of Directors and the Executive Director. The Executive Director makes final selections of 5 proposals to make up the 2014 programming year. Selected applicants will be contacted in March 2013. Please note that only applicants under consideration will be contacted.

Funding


221A is a non-profit organization funded through a mixture of self-generated income, private donations and public funding. All projects are funded through the organization's operating budget at $4,000. This budget may increase through the success of project-based grants-with average projects ranging up to $25,000. All projects must pay fees to artists and curators at the minimum CARFAC rates or higher.

International Residency Program at the Darling Foundry, Montreal

The International Residency Program at the Darling Foundry has built a reputation as one of the world’s best artists’ residencies.

The Darling Foundry, located in Old Montreal (Quebec, Canada), is an alternative visual arts complex with an outstanding architectural design. It provides opportunities for research, creation, production, and exhibition. Its multifaceted spaces, spanning 3500 m², provide room for residency studios, living accommodations, technical workshops, gallery spaces, a restaurant and offices. The International Residency is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.

The program supports foreign visual artists from outside of Canada. One residency of six months will be awarded. The schedule of the residency is from the beginning of January 2013 to the end of June 2013. The resident artist will receive a grant amount of $23,000 CAD which contributes towards travel, subsistence, and production costs.

The resident artist will be provided with a studio measuring 100 m² and a separate living accommodation (for single occupancy), with access to common living spaces. In addition, the Darling Foundry provides the laureate with organizational and technical assistance, promotion and networking opportunities. The resident artist will have the option to participate in open studio events, studio visits by arts professionals, and trips to artistic events. Applications are evaluated by a selection committee consisting of arts professionals. The committee base their selection on the artistic quality of the applicant’s artistic work, the potential impact of the residency on the applicant’s career, and the contribution to the Montreal and Canadian arts community.

THE COASTER PROJECT, DESTINATION: THE WORLD (2012 Project)

Ten years ago TransCultural Exchange's launched one of the largest democratic, global art projects in the world: 'The Coaster Project, Destination: The World.' Between March 9 and May 19, 2002, 99+ artists transcended geographical, political and cultural boundaries to stage 99+ exhibitions throughout the world. Afterwards, all 10,000+ art works were given away in the guise of "coasters" at bars, cafes and restaurants. To celebrate, TransCultural Exchange will stage a 10th year anniversary exhibit and give-away of 'The Coaster Project, Destination: The World' at Toronto's '2012 Culture Works Festival.' All the original "Coaster Project" artists have been asked to contribute a coaster; and, we are looking for other artists to also participate. The Open Photo Contest

The Open is a worldwide search for the greatest photographers of our generation. It features both online and live events and delivers one of the largest prize purses in the photo industry. CAFKA.13 - The Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener and Area, Canada

CAFKA wants to hear what artists are thinking about and what drives their practice. The theme of the Spring 2013 biennial exhibition will therefore be determined by the topics and content identified within the proposals. Further, CAFKA seeks artists who are able to respond to the specific features of the local urban landscape and culture as sites of critique and reflection from a global perspective.

CAFKA is inviting proposals for new or existing works that engage the public and a diverse audience. Works in all media will be considered including sculpture, performance, video, audio, installation, photography, painting, drawing, and digital media.

Artist Fees paid for Visual and Media Art Projects: $2,000 CAD, plus travel expenses. Wherever possible CAFKA will work with artists to source the donation of materials to help offset production costs. Video and one-time performance fees are paid in accordance with CARFAC (Canadian Artists’ Representation/le Front des Artistes Canadiens).

For the 2012 / 2013 programming schedule, AXENÉO7 is soliciting projects for exhibitions relating to other places, to twisted representations, to intensified, conceptual or dreamlike reinterpretations of the world; other universes, other spaces, metaphorical spaces, morphological spaces, a type of physical interpretation of reality within reality, in constant self reference in aims to understand the mechanism behind it all. More than replaying and reinterpreting the world, it is about playing, literally, while inventing new ways of seeing, feeling or conceiving reality.

Proposals can be in any medium and of various types and durations; they can put into question the usual constraints of an exhibition space. With this in mind, AXENÉO7 offers significant and flexible support. For this call, AXENÉO7 wishes to pursue ideas of commitment and upheaval that were put forth in the 2011 / 2012 programming.

Klondike Institute of Art and Culture (KIAC) Residencies

General Call for Applications

Next Deadline: April 1, 2012 for 2013 Residency Schedule

The Klondike Institute of Art and Culture (KIAC) is now accepting applications from visual artists, media artists, and interdisciplinary artists for its 2013 Artist in Residence Program.

The residence accommodates up to two artists concurrently for research, development and production of ongoing or new bodies of work.

Artists may also have the opportunity to facilitate outreach programs such as talks, workshops and exhibitions, intended to promote interaction and professional development, and provide access to a diverse range of contemporary arts practices and theories within the community.

General Call Residencies will run April 21 through June 30, and from August 21 through December 31, 2013. Participants are responsible for all travel and personal expenses including food and materials related to their work.

KIAC accepts applications from visual artists, media artists and interdisciplinary artists, as well as curators. Consideration will be given to professional, established and emerging Canadian and international artists. All disciplines will be considered including but not limited to: Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, Design, Architecture, Photography, Installation, Performance, Video and Film, Filmmaking, New Media, and Audio. KIAC encourages applications from artists of diverse cultural and regional communities of Canada.

There is no fee charged or stipend paid for a residency. Participants are responsible for the cost of all travel to and from Dawson City as well as all materials related to their artwork and for personal living expenses including food. Artists in Residence are asked to provide one free public talk during their residency. Artists who provide additional outreach programming through KIAC will be paid accordingly within the current KIAC fee structure. All successful applicants are encouraged to apply for travel grants from the Canada Council for the Arts or their provincial/regional arts councils; the success rate of travel grants to our residency program are very high.

The Artist in Residence facilities are located in the Macaulay Residence. Constructed in 1901, this 2-story home is now owned by Parks Canada as part of the Dawson Historical Complex National Historic Site of Canada. The building can accommodate two individual artists concurrently. Residents are provided with an individual studio space and bedroom, along with shared living room, bathroom and kitchen areas. The house has full laundry facilities. The studios measure 16′ x 14′ and 13′ x 12′ respectively and are provided with some natural light and additional portable studio lights and basic furnishings. Each studio comes with basic hand tools. There may be limited access, by special request, to additional KIAC and Yukon SOVA facilities and equipment. 2013 Film Festival Residency

The Dawson City International Short Film Festival takes place each spring on Easter Weekend. The 2011 Film Festival presented screenings of over 100 short films and videos from around the world to over 1,600 enthusiastic cinema buffs. The festival weekend includes workshops, panel discussions and special presentations by participating filmmakers and special guests.

Filmmakers working in all media may apply for residency dates to coincide with the Film Festival and have the opportunity to participate in Festival Programming. In past years, KIAC Artists in Residence have presented their films in special screenings and talks, facilitated workshops, and participated in panel discussions.

The Film Festival Residency runs March 1 through April 27, 2013.

2013 The Natural & The Manufactured: An ODD Gallery and KIAC Artist in Residence

Thematic Project

The ODD Gallery seeks proposals from visual artists working in all media for this yearly thematic project, which consists of two exhibition-creation residencies leading to one gallery-based and one outdoor installation. New projects and site-specific ideas are encouraged, but previous work and continuing projects may also be proposed.

The Natural & Manufactured residency and exhibition project runs July 1 through August 21, 2013.

Applications to the N&M will be considered for BOTH residency and exhibition components for July and August of each year. Project activities are presented as part of KIAC’s Yukon Riverside Arts Festival in mid-August. The N&M re-examines the various cultural and economic values imposed on the environment, while exploring alternative social, economic and aesthetic strategies towards a re-interpretation of landscape and social infrastructure.

Project activities include two six-week creation/installation residency periods, two exhibition projects, opening receptions, artist talks and guest lectures.
