This residency takes place in the former home and studio of artist John Latham, which he designated a 'living sculpture'. Flat Time House operates as a base for interrogating sculpture as a subject of research, rather than a static artform or medium. The residency will involve time spent in the John Latham and Barry Flanagan Archives.

The selected artist will be provided with accommodation, studio, stipend and a production budget towards new work. The artist will be selected from an open call, with the 4 month residency resulting in a public exhibition and publication in 2014. Period: November 2013 - March 2014.

The residency selection panel consists of Mike Nelson (Artist) Jo Melvin (Barry Flanagan Foundation), Claire Louise Staunton (Curator, FTHo) and Jon Wood (Research Curator, Henry Moore Institute).

Tate St Ives Seeking Artistic Director

Tate St Ives, part of the Tate family of Museums which includes Tate Britain, Tate Modern and Tate Liverpool, is developing as an international centre of art and exchange at the heart of Cornwall. Rooted in its local context with a particular focus on the St Ives Modernists, the gallery seeks to reflect the radical nature of this legacy in a dynamic programme of modern and contemporary art. The Museum is currently embarked on a 13.3m GBP capital project, completing in 2016, which will transform the gallery's ability to host and engage with a variety of visiting and local audiences and improve the capacity of its artistic programme.

Leading the delivery of the artistic vision for Tate St Ives, the new Artistic Director will direct and lead the gallery's art and learning programmes to reflect and embody the role of Tate St Ives as a centre for enjoyment and study of 20th-century contemporary art. They will work closely with the Executive Director and have access to the Director, Tate and Tate National on the development of the artistic programme and to the Director, Tate Learning on the development of the learning programme. They will play a key role with the Executive Director in setting the strategic direction and business plan for Tate St Ives and will represent Tate St Ives effectively to artists, collectors and institutions in Cornwall and the South West, also nationally and internationally.

Candidates for this Director-level post will not only have a distinguished track record as a curator of modern and contemporary art and a deep commitment to and understanding of learning programmes, they will also be able to demonstrate management and leadership capability. They will have academic leadership and research skills as well as the ability to lead, influence, negotiate and work collaboratively across a complex organisation to deliver exceptional results.

Residencies/exhibitions will run between February and December 2014. Applicants from all creative disciplines are welcome to apply.
 
The Telfer Gallery provides a platform for focused experimentation as well as a space for artists to explore and expand their practice. Each selected individual or group will be offered a period of residency in the space preceding an exhibition, which will be arranged in conversation with the committee.
The Telfer Gallery will provide the following:

• A 60 square metre gallery space
• 24-hour access to gallery space
• A support network encompassing two project managers, gallery committee, and the surrounding 31 artist studios placed within the building
• Marketing and promotion of events including printed materials
• Optional discussion groups and critical development workshops

Politics of Food Residency (London, England)

Delfina Foundation (DF) is inviting artists, curators, writers, film makers and other cultural practitioners interested in exploring issues surrounding the politics of food to apply for their first theme-based residency, scheduled to run from mid January to mid April 2014.

From Marinetti's Manifesto of Futurist Cooking to Gordon Matta Clark's Food restaurant ,and more recently Michael Rakowitz's Enemy Kitchen, artists have long employed food within their practice and creative process. But beyond the concept of cooking and eating as a performative act, the last decade has witnessed a proliferation of cultural practitioners and artist interrogating the global politics and ethics of food production, distribution and consumption. Moreover, food has also been used by cultural practitioners as a means of understanding complex histories and questioning current issues, from neoliberalism to globalisation. By bringing together practitioners from different creative fields, DF would like to explore how artistic strategies have and can be used to address wide-ranging issues related to food, agriculture, human rights and the environment. DF is particularly interested in practitioners whose work transgresses the boundaries between art and every day life. By creating a focussed environment, DF aims to facilitate collaborative exchange fostering new ideas and projects. DF will support peer-to-peer conversations between residents through a series of informal gatherings and meals, as well as targeted organisational visits and opportunities to engage with artists, academics and researchers interested in the same lines of inquiry. These internal events will be complemented with an external public programme of talks, screenings, dinners and panel discussions presenting the work, ideas and exchanges taking place.

Henry Moore Institute: Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship

An award-winning exhibitions venue, research centre, library and sculpture archive, the Institute hosts a year-round programme of exhibitions, conferences, lectures, research, and publications that aim to expand the understanding and scholarship of historical and contemporary sculpture. The Institute invites applications for a two-year fellowship, beginning in autumn 2013. Based at the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds, the Post-doctoral Fellow's research focus should be pre-twentieth-century sculpture, paying particular attention to the ways in which history is engaged with in the present. The Post-doctoral Research Fellowship is funded by The Henry Moore Foundation's Grants Programme and will receive a grant of 21,000 GBP per annum over the two-year period, payable quarterly. This grant is to cover living and all research-associated expenses.

Fellowship specifications:
–The Research Fellow will take responsibility for the research, organization and realisation of one workshop (year one) and one two-day international conference (year two) at the Henry Moore Institute relating to their own specialist research.–The Research Fellow will research, organise and realise one series of four public evening talks in relation to an exhibition of the researcher's choice within the Institute's programme.–The Research Fellow will take an active role within the day-to-day activities of the Institute, assisting with the Research Team's work with Research Fellows and events.–The Research Fellow will take part in Henry Moore Institute events and major staff meetings, providing additional academic response and feedback to research and exhibition development.–The Research Fellow will deliver, as a representative of the Henry Moore Institute, at least two academic papers at conferences / universities /museums relating to the Fellow's own research.–The Research Fellow will develop their own research by developing an exhibition / conference / publication proposal during the tenure, providing regular six-month updates to HMI staff at team meetings.–The Fellow will be expected to be based at the Henry Moore Institute, and to work with the Research Team for a minimum of two days per week.Applicants for this fellowship should submit:

New Commission for The Higgins Art Gallery & Museum (Bedford, UK)

Bedford Creative Arts, in partnership with The Higgins Art Gallery & Museum, Bedford is seeking proposals from artists or artists’ groups for a major new commission in 2013, in response to their artistic theme for 2013: OURS – what we have in common and what makes something our own?

 

The Higgins Art Gallery & Museum is nearing the end of a £5.8m redevelopment project with ‘People, Place, Collections’ the theme and narrative arc that runs through their approach to the new galleries and displays. Proposals should respond to the specific identity of this institution, its collections, the town of Bedford and the people who live, work and visit there.

A commission fee of £5,000 is available for the chosen artist or artists group, with an additional budget of £5,000 available for materials, resources and the delivery of specific events and activities. There will also be the opportunity to work with us to identify and secure additional funds and resources in order for the commission to reach its full potential.

The Henry Moore Institute, a research centre for the study of sculpture, offers a number of fellowships, enabling researchers of different backgrounds and disciplines to develop their work at the Institute.

The Institute situated in Leeds, United Kingdom, hosts a year-round programme of exhibitions, conferences and lectures and develops research and publications, to expand the understanding of historical and contemporary sculpture.

The Henry Moore Institute, which is part of Henry Moore Foundation invites applications for the following fellowship programmes in 2012–2013:

Research Fellowships - intended for artists, scholars and curators, working on historic and contemporary sculpture using the Institute's library, archive of sculptors' papers and the collection of the Leeds Art Gallery. Up to four fellows will be given the opportunity to spend a month in Leeds to develop their own research.

Senior Fellowships - intended to give established scholars (working on any aspect of sculpture) time and space to develop a research project free from their usual work commitments. Two senior fellowships, for periods of between four and six weeks will be offered.

Both fellowships provide accommodation, travel expenses and a per diem.

The Institute offers the possibility of presenting the finished research in published form, as a seminar, or as a small exhibition.

The London Open at Whitechapel Gallery

Call for Artists

The Whitechapel Gallery calls for all artists aged 26 or over living and working in London to enter The London Open, the Gallery's triennial open submission exhibition. Providing a snapshot of art now, the exhibition aims to showcase the most dynamic and engaging work being made across the capital to an international audience in 2012.

The London Open offers a timely opportunity to see the latest developments and key emerging trends in contemporary art. Selected from open submissions, all of the works will have been made since 2000.

A panel of leading art experts will select work by both new and more established artists. The panel includes writer and critic Patricia Bickers, artist Rodney Graham, collector Jack Kirkland, curator Marta Kuzma and Whitechapel Gallery curator Kirsty Ogg.

2012 marks the 80th anniversary of the Gallery's open submission exhibition, which started in 1932 as the East End Academy 'for all artists living or working East of the famous Aldgate Pump.' It later became the Whitechapel Open, and showcased artists early in their careers such as Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, Julian Opie, Cornelia Parker, Grayson Perry, Bob & Roberta Smith, Richard Wentworth and Rachel Whiteread. For 2012 and beyond the Gallery is expanding the reach of the exhibition to artists London-wide to recognise the Gallery's cultural role in the city.

The Whitechapel Gallery is 'the artist's gallery for everyone' and is free and open all year round. For over a century the Gallery has premiered world-class artists from modern masters such as Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Frida Kahlo to contemporaries such as Sophie Calle, Lucien Freud, Gilbert & George and Mark Wallinger. The Gallery is a touchstone for contemporary art internationally and plays a central role in London's cultural landscape, with The London Open continuing this tradition by providing a platform for artists living and working in one of the most diverse cultural centres in the world in 2012 to show their work.

The panel selecting works for The London Open includes: Patricia Bickers, editor of Art Monthly. She is the author of The Brit Pack: Contemporary British Art, the View from Abroad and numerous essays. In 2008 she curated Print the Legend: The Myth of the West at the Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh. She has been associated with awards including New Contemporaries, 1994, The Turner Prize, 2001, and the Northern Art Prize, 2009. Rodney Graham, leading international artist who lives and works in Vancouver, Canada. He presented Vexation Island in the Canadian Pavilion at the 1997 Venice Biennale and made a solo exhibition for the Whitechapel Gallery in 2002. His recent exhibition Rodney Graham – Through the Forest toured to Museum of Contemporary Art, Barcelona, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg and Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Basel in 2010. Jack Kirkland who studied and practiced law, then worked in real estate and investments with the Abstract Group of Companies before becoming a director of Bowmer & Kirkland, one of the largest private construction companies in the UK. He collects art widely and also sits on the board of Modern Art Oxford and the Tate's Latin American and Photography Acquisitions Committees. Marta Kuzma, Director of the Office for Contemporary Art Norway (OCA). She co-curated Manifesta 5 in San Sebastián, Spain in 2004, and is part of the curatorial team of documenta (13). Kuzma is a visiting professor for the post-graduate Visual Arts programme at the University IUAV in Venice and a member of the editorial board of contemporary arts journal Afterall. Kirsty Ogg, curator at the Whitechapel Gallery and of The London Open. She was previously Director of The Showroom, London, a gallery dedicated to commissioning new work by artists at an early stage in their careers, where she worked with artists including Jim Lambie, Claire Barclay, Eva Rothschild, Subodh Gupta, Richard Hughes and Daria Martin. At the Whitechapel Gallery she has curated exhibitions including Where Three Dreams Cross: 150 Years of Photography from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh; Bethan Huws: Capelgwyn and Paul Graham Photographs 1981 – 2006. Kirsty also lectures at Goldsmiths University.

A special publication will accompany the exhibition. Works in The London Open will be for sale. Selected artists will also produce a range of limited edition artworks in support of the Whitechapel Gallery's exhibitions and education programme.

Acme International Residencies Program is now accepting applications directly from artists for our Associate Artist Residency (AAR) program. AAR enables artists to access the networks and opportunities previously only available through residencies with our partner organizations.

An AAR is tailored to the specific needs of the artist, allowing them to research, develop relationships and focus on their work in a supported environment. Residencies can be developed around a particular project, or be conceived of as networking and contacts focused. The IRP manager mentors AAR artists individually, matching their skills and ambitions with industry experts. We help artists make the most of their time in London by introducing new creative supports and establishing mentoring relationships. Acme facilitates introductions, discussions and presentations with contemporary galleries, consultants, artists and cultural organizations. This approach benefits the artist well beyond the residency period, often leading to further opportunities.

Requirements:
Artists require five years professional experience, strong English language skills and the confidence to hold discussions (in English) with arts industry professionals. AAR is not open to undergraduate students. Postgraduate students may apply if they have the required professional experience independent of their studies.

Swedenborg Short Film Festival 2011

Call for Submissions

The Swedenborg Short Film Festival 2011 is now open for entries and will place in the Society’s grade II listed neo-classical Hall. Following the success of last year, we hope the festival will continue to establish itself as an annual landmark event on the UK film calendar.

Featuring films of 30 mins or less, the heart of the Festival is to showcase the latest new and established talent. Films should respond to themes encountered in the work of scientist, philosopher, radical theologian and mystic Emanuel Swedenborg (1688 - 1772). Submissions are invited on a variety of themes and genres. Selected submissions will be screened to a public audience at Swedenborg Hall; at the closing of the festival an award will be given for Best Film.

* All film submissions must be sent in DVD format by post, with a completed application form (available to download below).

* An administration fee of £5 is placed on all submissions.

* A stamped self-addressed envelope is be included for the return of submissions.

Simulacrum - elysium gallery’s photography open 2011

'Our era prefers the image to the thing, the copy to the original, the representation to the reality, appearance to being.’ Ludwig Feuerbach

Over the past hundred years our internal memories have been replaced with external aids such as the photograph. These technological crutches are there so we no longer need to store information in our brains.

The implications of replacing our interior memory with an external source means that something will be lost in this process. What is at stake here is every part of our relationship with the world and the people in it. Photography’s sheer ability to be everywhere has affected the collective memory of social and cultural experiences to the extent that photographs can often appear to function as a substitute for the experience themselves.

elysium gallery is looking for work that addresses the notion of photographic representation and the impact this has on the way we see and interact with the world.

A selection of up to 8 images can be submitted. Work must be wall mountable with each image no larger than 20x24 inches.

Entry fee is £10 or £8 for students.

The show will be a selection of the best pieces of work with one overall winner claiming the prize of £200. All successful entrants will also receive a profile page on the elysium gallery web site and an annual subscription to our membership programme free of charge.

The themes of this residency are re-invention and re-imagining. ArtFunkl is looking for artists who are sensitive to the psychological and physical regenerative powers of the new year cycle, and willing to become part of the means to create energy during the come-down which follows a period of holiday and repose.

You will:
Have space and time to work on your own project.
Show your work during the final week of the residency
Be involved in devising and constructing the exhibition space for your show
Be actively involved in making contacts and promoting the exhibition.
Have the opportunity to host gatherings or social events at the venue.
Room Fees:
Room 1: £375 pcm
Room 2: £325 pcm

A paragraph about yourself, a personal description (around 50 – 100 words).
