An artwork which is suitable for being represented in a digital format, as information, can be identically duplicated in unlimited numbers and shared on P2P networks on the Internet by the artist without the intermediation of the culture industry. If this work of art is also suitable for being experienced independent of space and time and without the help of any particular
sophisticated apparatus, it can communicate the ideas of the artist to everyone who has basic tools for and knowledge of using the Internet.

This study suggests and introduces the concept of “digitiple” as a model for the construction and distribution of such an artwork as a “digital multiple” to be shared on P2P networks as a copyleft “digital gift”. “Digitiple” is just one example of many potential political uses of information technologies in contemporary art.

More than 900 artists from around 100 countries have developed and advanced projects at the Akademie since its opening in 1990, creating a close-knit, global network of Solitude alumni that expands from year to year. The Akademie pursues an intense exchange between artistic and scientific disciplines. International artists are invited to apply from the following disciplines: Architecture (design, landscape architecture, urban planning), Visual Arts (including performance art), Performing Arts (stage design, dramatic texts, dramaturgy, musical theater, performance, direction, drama, dance), Design(fashion, costume, product and furniture design, visual communication), Literature (essay, criticism, poetry, prose, translation), Music/Sound (interpretation, sound installation, sound performance, composition) and Video/Film/New Media(including video installation).

Information on the Central Topic:
Every two years, at the beginning of a new application round, the Akademie stipulates a new central topic within the context of its art, science & business program. To this end, fellows are selected in the fields of art, humanities, sciences, and business, internal and public events are organized and publications are released. All artists (fellows of the Akademie) are free to participate in projects related to the central topic, while this is mandatory for fellows in the art, science & business program.

Following the initiative of this year’s jury chairwoman Corinne Diserens, the Akademie will be dedicating itself to the topic of "Work Without Qualities" from autumn 2011 through summer 2013.

A loss of social ties, on the one hand, and the emergence of new communication strategies within homogeneous social groups on the other has been experienced since the beginning of late capitalism and the resultant end of the "ethic of endurance", deemed the foundation of the employer-employee relationship.

Nowadays, as sociologist Richard Sennett explains, it is very much a question of creating relationships between individuals who can no longer rely on the stable organization of the working world.

With this new central topic, the Academy intends to initiate a far-reaching interdisciplinary discussion regarding the consequences of the change in work organization in contemporary society within the context of its art, science & business program from 2011 to 2013. By selecting this topic, the Academie wishes to address legal professionals, sociologists, economists, philosophers, anthropologists, and artists of all disciplines.
