The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world's finest museums, seeks a Curator of Architecture & Design that is a specialist in both Architecture and Design. In this respect, the Curator will work closely with the Chairman and will participate in the active research, development and management of the Modern and Contemporary collection and the Breuer project; major special exhibitions; initiation of collection displays, publications and interpretation; and participation in all activities of the Department. Primary responsibilities and duties:–Working closely with the Chairman and other full Curators, assist with management of the Modern and Contemporary Department. –Using expertise in architecture and design, lead the review of architecture, design and other related aspects of the collection. –Lead departmental collection and research strategies in respect to architecture and design. –Initiate and curate major special exhibitions for the Breuer project. –Devise and plan collection displays and other projects for Modern & Contemporary. –Initiate special exhibitions, including research, catalog entries and other texts for Museum Programs. –Cultivate new relationships and maintain existing connections with donors, patrons, collectors, colleagues from other international institutions, the scholarly community, dealers, and other individuals involved with the interests of the Museum. –Act as editor, key author, and essayist as appropriate for major exhibition catalogues and other specialized publications, including online content. –On behalf of Chairman, oversee and expedite correspondence related to Collection and Modern and Contemporary Programs. –Contribute to public programs (Learning, Volunteers, Visiting Scholars, etc.) as appropriate. –According to Modern& Contemporary Department objectives, interact with potential sponsors and assist with fundraising as appropriate. –Advise on planning programs for Modern and Contemporary Department patrons' groups. –Other related duties. Experience and skills requirements:–Minimum ten years (preferably fifteen years) experience in a museum or academic institution. –Demonstrated engagement with artistic, architectural and design theory and international practice across the world. –Demonstrated scholarly achievement and extensive published record, including evidence of original research. –Initiated and executed major and relevant loan exhibitions with broad international scope. –Demonstrated commitment to broad international engagement and learning. –Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with internal colleagues across the Museum and externally with artists, designers, scholars, architects, donors and general public. –Ability to create and maintain precise and widely researched records. Knowledge and education:–PhD (or equivalent) history of art or architecture. –Deep expertise in twentieth and twenty-first century architecture, design and art. –Extensive background in international modern and contemporary culture. –Excellent written and spoken English. –Proficiency in one non-English language. International Curator Competition 2013

Call for Entries

Started in 2012, Akbank Sanat International Curator Competition has the goal to provide support for emerging curators, reinforce interest in curatorial practices, and encourage new projects in the field of contemporary art.

Developed and coordinated by Basak Senova, the competition has an application-based process. The content and the quality of the proposals will be evaluated by an international jury consisting of three curators. This year's jury includes Anne Barlow (Director of Art in General, New York, and Co-Curator of the Latvian Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale), Christine Tohme (Director of Ashkal Alwan, Beirut), and Branko Franceschi (curator of the Croatian Pavilion, 55th Venice Biennale; co-curator of the Project Biennial D-0 ARK Underground in Bosnia and Herzegovina; and Director of the Virtual Museum of the Contemporary Art).

The winning curator is given opportunities to realize the proposal as an exhibition that will take place in the first half of 2014 at Akbank Art Centre, Istanbul, accompanied by an exhibition catalogue and additional activities. The curatorial fee, the exhibition production, travel expenses of the curator/s and artists, the production of the catalogue and the additional activities will be covered by Akbank Sanat.
Eligibility
Curators under the age of 40 are eligible to apply for the competition. There is no condition of residency or citizenship. Curators may apply for the competition as individuals as well as in groups (or as curatorial collectives). Curators will not be allowed to participate as artists in the projects.
Guidelines
By filling out the application form, the curators will explain the conceptual framework of the exhibition proposal as well as the artists and their works in detail. There could be additional activities (for instance: talks or video screenings) that could be incorporated into the exhibition proposal. Application forms must be written in English. Applicants are expected to submit (only electronic copies) the completed application form, CV (maximum two pages) and accompanying visual material for their proposals (maximum 4MB total) by sending emails to icc@akbank.com. Closing date for applications is September 10, 2013, 17h GMT +2. Entries must be previously unpublished, and the proposal must not have been realised or exhibited before. All applicants will be notified of the jury's decision by October, 1, 2013.

Emphasizing artistic projects situated outside conventional exhibition contexts, Project Anywhere is dedicated to the promotion of advanced artistic practice at the outermost limits of location-specificity. Project Anywhere endorses a two-stage peer review system comparable with the journal-based paradigm for assessing the quality of research outcomes in the arts. Accordingly, Project Anywhere is designed to suit artist academics working anywhere in the world who are seeking independent peer validation and international web-based dissemination for practice-based research. Canadian Centre for Architecture 2013 Curatorial Opportunities Program

For the third year, the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) launches two curatorial opportunities beginning in Fall 2013: the Young Curator Program and the Curatorial Internships Program.

The Young Curator Program offers the opportunity to propose and curate a project on the contemporary debate in architecture, urbanism, and landscape design during a residency of three months at the CCA. Architects, journalists, designers, critics, historians and practitioners in any other relevant field born on or after 1 January 1978 are eligible. With the generous support of the Power Corporation of Canada, the Curatorial Internships Program encourages students and recent graduates in design disciplines, arts and humanities born on or after January 1, 1983 to become acquainted with the CCA's collection, exhibition, and research programs through an internship of six to nine months in Montréal.

The call for applications for both the Young Curator Program and the Curatorial Internships Program will remain open until April 15, 2013, with the residency and internship beginning in fall 2013.

221A Call for Curatorial Residents 2013-14

221A is an artist-run centre located in Vancouver, Canada with a mandate to support the advancement of contemporary art that explores design as a subject. Projects presented at 221A address design in its widest sense, which may encompass graphics, products, architecture, or, more broadly, social codes and conventions.

221A is seeking proposals from curators for projects to commence in 2014. Implemented in 2010 the Curatorial Residencies program encourages a diversity of curatorial approaches to the organization's mandate. Emerging and professional curators, curatorial collectives, which may include recent graduates and practicing artists, designers and architects, are encouraged to submit proposals to be developed over the course of one year. Projects may include exhibitions, performances, publications, talks or workshops. Proposals should discuss a viewpoint, theory or approach that the project hopes to foster in relation to the organization's mandate.

Selected candidates will be expected to work with the Executive Director to research, plan and execute the project. In addition, selected curators are required to participate in the Curatorial Committee, starting mid 2013 for a minimum one-year term (meeting every 2 months) to offer feedback to other curatorial residents and the program. The committee offers a space for reflection on the wider program at 221A and a relationship between curatorial residents, staff and community. International participants will be expected to attend meetings through online voice/video chat.

Proposal Guidelines


Applicants must submit a digital proposal (to bchhay@221a.ca) including:

·      -a one to two-page project proposal, describing the curatorial project;


·      -a current CV of each of the key contributors (maximum 3 pages each);


·      -related images/texts as required (pdf or jpegs, max. 15 images, or up to 10 min. of audio or video). For large format images or videos that cannot be transmitted by email please include instructions for access.

Proposals are intended to provide the overall intention and background of the project. Applicants proposing self-curated projects must describe the reasoning behind this approach. Further research and development of the project is expected upon selection.

Selections Process


Project proposals are shortlisted by a committee comprised of members of the Board of Directors and the Executive Director. The Executive Director makes final selections of 5 proposals to make up the 2014 programming year. Selected applicants will be contacted in March 2013. Please note that only applicants under consideration will be contacted.

Funding


221A is a non-profit organization funded through a mixture of self-generated income, private donations and public funding. All projects are funded through the organization's operating budget at $4,000. This budget may increase through the success of project-based grants-with average projects ranging up to $25,000. All projects must pay fees to artists and curators at the minimum CARFAC rates or higher.

A.i.R. Dubai Curatorial Residency

Open Call

The partners of A.i.R. Dubai – The Dubai Arts & Culture Authority, Delfina Foundation, Art Dubai and Tashkeel – in collaboration with ArtAsiaPacific are inviting international curators to apply for its 2013 residency programme, scheduled to run from January 7 to March 31, 2013.

Applications are open to curators interested in pursuing research, curatorial and critical writing opportunities in the Gulf. The curator will be in residence alongside three international artists and three Emirati artists, selected by the partners and a guest juror. Each international artist will be commissioned to produce new work for Art Dubai Projects, the fair’s not-for-profit programme of activities, while all artists are expected to showcase new work (or ideas-in-progress) in the residency house for an open studio programme, with the guidance and support of the curator-in-residence, in association with SIKKA Art Fair.

The selected curator will be an upcoming/mid-career curator from anywhere in the world, either working with an established institution (and able to take a sabbatical) or freelance. The jury will be seeking applicants who have demonstrated interest in the UAE/Gulf/Middle East with the capacity for in-depth research and writing. It is expected that the curator will use the opportunity to further develop links within and knowledge of the Gulf, with a view to working with artists based in, or ideas developed within, this region in the future.

During the residency, the curator will be expected to:
- conduct studio/gallery visits
- provide curatorial support to A.i.R. Dubai’s resident artists and their respective commissions
- work with partners to develop / curate A.i.R. Dubai’s open studios, which might include a written contribution to exhibition materials
- participate in an educational programme around A.i.R. Dubai and its partners (such as Tashkeel, Art Dubai’s Education Programme and Sikka Art Fair)

Lisbon Architecture Triennale 2013

The Lisbon Architecture Triennale Association is a not-for-profit organisation, founded in 2006. The first two Triennale editions have been officially recognised and acknowledged by the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic and the Ministry of Culture as events of cultural relevance. As the most significant architectural event in the Iberian Peninsula, the Lisbon Architecture Triennale aims to establish itself as a wide forum of debate, reflection, prospect and promotion of architecture, from territorial to building scales, discussing issues of contemporary architecture, starting from the principle that architectural practice is a fundamental expression of the creation of place, the construction of an integrating sense of citizenship, and cultural affirmation.

The Chief Curator is to develop the general concept starting from the theme of “Density / Intensity” or present an alternative proposal for the 3rd edition of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale, consisting of:


3 main exhibitions in Lisbon and1 satellite exhibition in Oporto; 1 exhibition as a satellite event outside Portugal (in collaboration with international partner institutions); 2 international architecture (idea-) competitions, both for professionals and architecture students; a series of bilingual publications ; accompanying educational services and programmes, among other activities.

The successful applicant shall fulfil the job based partly or temporarily in Lisbon, as required by the project’s evolution and mutually agreed between the commissioner and the chief curatorary 20. Proposals are invited from individuals as well as collectives of any nationality and country of residence.
